Are you looking to paint your cabinets in Kelowna while stuck inside this winter? Here are 5 tips from professional painters on how to paint your cabinets.

Wood is the absolute best for painting

Whether your cabinets have unfinished, painted, or stained wood, it doesn’t matter as they all work well as the paint will last much longer. Though if you have stained or a gloss finish on your cabinets, they will need to be de-glossed fist. You can apply some liquid sander with a rag to do this.

Prepping is just as important as painting

The first thing you’ll want to do is empty the cabinets and clean them. Make sure there are no traces of dirt or grease. Next remove the knobs/handles, and remove any drawers and label them in case you forget where they go.

Now tape off any parts of the cabinets that won’t be painted, such as hinges, countertops, and any nearby appliances. Now it’s time to sand the cabinets. You can use a rotary sander as it works well on flat surfaces. If you are removing stain from the cabinets, use 220 sandpaper.

Applying Primer

Once you have finished prepping the cabinets you will need to prime them. Make sure not to use an all-in-one primer as they don’t work very well. You’ll want to use an oil primer as it adheres to the paint the best.

Purchase quality paint

This is not where you want to save money and buy cheap paint, as you will get far better results with quality paint. When painting your cabinets you’ll want to apply 2 coats of paint, and always make sure to ventilate the room with the windows open, and preferably a fan pointing out the window.

The harder the finish the better

With cabinets you want a nice hard surface as it is much more durable. You want the surface to be able to handle the occasional bump and one that can be easily cleaned. Matte finishes on cabnets do not hold up nearly as well as semi-gloss, gloss, or satin finishes.
